Homeownership is not always glamorous. It frequently involves hard work and maintenance to ensure that your investment is well taken care of and lasts for years to come.
Regularly cleaning your gutters is one of those chores that occur bi-annually for all homeowners. Gutters direct rain off your roof and away from the foundation of your home. But, when gutters aren’t maintained, complications can arise.
When limbs, leaves, and debris builds up in your gutters it can clog your drainage system. Water pooling in your gutters can cause them to pull away from the facia of your house or exacerbate leaks and water damage. Stagnant water is the perfect environment for bugs and critters to breed in–especially mosquitos. Clogged gutters can cause thousands of dollars of damage.
You know you need to clean your gutters; however, one of the most common questions regarding gutter maintenance involves the frequency of the chore or the best time of year to do it.
When Do I Need to Clean My Gutters?
Ideally, gutters need to be cleaned at least twice a year–once in the spring and once in the fall. Planning to clean your gutters in the late spring ensures that any limbs, leaves, or blooms that fell in your system are removed. It’s also a great time to check the integrity of your entire system. If you had heavy snowfall through the winter, the weight might have affected your gutters.
The fall of each year is the most important time to clean your gutters. When the leaves descend in autumn, cleaning your gutters to remove any stragglers is imperative.
There is one exception made for lawns or yards with pine trees. Pine trees shed their needles more frequently. If you have a yard full of pine, you need to check your gutters once every three months (four times a year).
If you find a twice-annual rhythm, cleaning your gutters won’t be quite as bad. Keeping gutters clean and maintained is much easier than troubleshooting serious problems after years of neglect.
Be careful. Cleaning your gutters can be a dangerous job, especially if you live in a multi-story dwelling. If you don’t have the equipment to do it carefully or have concerns about the integrity of your gutters or drainage system, it’s best to call in the experts.
